Find Your Type of Woman at Love@AOL

July 3, 2006 by NML

6dollrow.jpgLove@AOL has come up with 8 profiles of women that represent ‘types’ that men may go for with explanations on the appeal of these women and some pointers on pitfalls that a guy may encounter. It then links up these profiles to dating profiles on AOL that match these types.

The Find Your Type of Woman tool at Love@AOL looks at The Socialite, The Model, The Church Lady, The Party Girl, The Overachiever, The Mom, The Exotic, and The Activist as ‘types’ that men go far and sad as it is to say it, like life itself, some of them are representative of the shallow decisions as to ‘types’ that people fancy. That said, it actually gives some interesting pointers to guys that do show that flipside of choosing women with certain lifestyles. For instance, ‘The Model’ may cater to the hard-on and look fantastic on the arm but the tool suggests in the rather broad sense that ‘The Model’ may not be right for him because “She thinks euthanasia are young kids in Asia”;”Her full time job is looking pretty”. I couldn’t help but snicker when it suggested that ‘The Activist’ would be great at supporting a guy 100% (as long as it didn’t conflict with her causes) but that “Water conservation means she showers every other week”.

And that’s what this tool is - it’s a broad tool that by the very nature of type generalises about a certain type of woman and then takes the user to dating profiles of women that fit within these categories because they have expressed certain interests or lifestyle preferences. I know women who hold down very decent jobs in an office that sometimes defy logic with the strange things they come out with and don’t doubt that there are some very intelligent models that are just capitalising on their looks. If anything the suggestions should get a guy thinking a little bit beyond the surface about what pursuing a certain type of woman could potentially represent or it may flag up to a guy why he has been going wrong in previous relationships. By looking at why these types are so popular and also what their downfalls are, it may even point a guy in a direction that he hadn’t considered before.

Ever sarcastic, a while back I wrote about 10 Men That Make Dating Mistakes and have also talked about the pitfalls of Toxic Types. I shall be writing more posts on ‘type’ in the future.

I read through those ‘type’ descriptions, and they were humorous, sure, but so reinforcing (and furthering) standard stereotypes that if some keyword that I used in a dating profile triggered my name to appear under any of these “Types”, I’d feel I’d been done a huge disservice, as it sets a preconceived notion that I would have to work to DISPROVE, rather than starting out without such ridiculous connotations.

This is a prime example of how the goal of generating traffic by offering up some tittilating fluff actually works AGAINST the intended goals of the site. (or maybe NOT - perhaps it is actually in AOL’s best interests to sabotage relationships before they even start, to keep people single, thus continuing to be users on their site..?)

Nance - very interesting thought provoking comment. As someone who won’t touch online dating with a barge pole I’m inclined to think that dating profiles are cpnvoluted and if people are pitching themselves in these ‘types’ by pandering to these notions, then they just reaffirm the dubious attitude in the first place.
