Waiting to Have Sex
October 15, 2005 by NML
We live in a society that reaches for instant gratification on a constant basis. We have fast food, instant savings, speed dial, and a host of other modern conveniences that we just couldn’t live without. This article explores the concept that delayed gratification in a relationship might actually yield a fruitful end.
A friend mentioned to me a few nights ago something that sent me thinking. “Guys that I really like, I don’t sleep with.” Not that she was a prude, but for her, sex is very intimate. She pointed out that if she really liked the guy, she would want him to stick around. However, she had noticed that if she introduced sex too early into the relationship, eventually the balance would tip and he would lose interest.
I thought about this for a while and noticed that the longest relationships I have had were ones that we didn’t knock boots too early. So there must be a correlation between the length/depth of your relationship to the time you two started shagging. The question is what is it?
Since the dawn of time, men have been the hunters, the providers. Could it be that the thrill of the chase is what keeps them interested? Once you hand them everything they want on a silver platter, do you lose the mystique and charm that captured them in the first place? When they have to work to gain your respect, trust, love and affection, do they really appreciate it more?
I’m not saying that we should use sex to control the relationship; however you can decide when you first have sex. The longer you take to get to know someone, the better you will be able to see them without sex clouding your judgment.
Other advantages include you being able to weed out the Undesirables and Unavailables before you have sex with them. Don’t you just hate the whole ‘Wham-bam-thank you ma’am’ ideology and hate sleeping with someone that disappears from your life right after?
So maybe there is some truth in this waiting phenomenon. Perhaps waiting isn’t so bad after all.
